The second round of matches in Group G will conclude on Sunday when England meet Panama at Stadion Nizhny Novgorod. This match provides a great opportunity for England to possibly seal their place in the next round with a win. Belgium meet Tunisia the day before and if the Red Devils win that match, a win for England will send them through.
Little is expected of Panama but they will be hoping to pick up the first World Cup point in their history.
England came into this tournament with quiet optimism of what they could achieve. Things were going to plan when the Three Lions opened the scoring in their first match against Tunisia. However, despite some good attacking play, England could not extend their lead and conceded a stupid penalty which allowed Tunisia to equalise.
England pushed for a winner late in the game and found one through Harry Kane, much to the relief of the players and coaching staff.
If England are to go deep in the World Cup, they must be more clinical in-front of goal.
Panama started with arguably the toughest game of the group against Belgium. They equipped themselves well in the first half, denying Belgium any clear goal scoring opportunities and also causing a couple of problems at the other end of the pitch.
However, a quality goal from Dries Mertens opened the scoring for Belgium in the second half and they went on to score two more good goals.
Panama will be pleased with the way they defended for much of the game. Belgium’s individual talent was too much for them in the end but they are sure to adopt a similar approach in this match.
England could be without midfielder Dele Alli who has a thigh injury and that would mean a place in the starting XI for Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Raheem Sterling’s place in the team is coming under pressure and he could be replaced by Marcus Rashford.
Panama have no injury concerns ahead of this game and will start with the same defensive shape they employed against Belgium. Roman Torres will captain the team from the heart of the defence.
