The EFL Cup Semi Finals are upon us and first up on Tuesday we see Manchester City host Bristol City in an intriguing clash. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are the runaway leaders in the Premier League right now and even though their 18 match winning streak came to an end with their 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace they are still on for a possible quadruple this season. Bristol City will be hoping for a repeat of their performance from the previous round when they knocked out Manchester United 2-1 with a last gasp strike, but manager Lee Johnson knows that this will be an extremely tough game.
When: 7:45PM, Tuesday, January 9th, 2018
Where: The Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England
Manchester City come into this game in superb form and picked up yet another win against Burnley in the FA Cup on Saturday. Pep Guardiola named a surprisingly strong line up for that game and despite falling behind to a stunning first half goal, The Citizens roared back in the second half to win 4-1. Guardiola may decide to shuffle his pack a little for this first leg encounter, but considering his team selection against Burnley, I’d still expect him to name a strong line up here.
Bristol City come into this game on a poor run of form which has seen them lose three games in a row. Lee Johnson made a whole host of changes to side his for the 3-0 defeat to Watford in the FA Cup and the Bristol City manager confirmed that he had one eye on this cup tie with his team selection. Bristol City have struggled badly in their last two league matches, losing 5-0 to Aston Villa and 2-1 to Wolves in what was a tough Christmas fixture list for The Robins, but Johnson will be hoping that the magic of the cup can inspire his side on Tuesday.
- Manchester City are unbeaten in domestic football this season, with 20 wins and 2 draws in the Premier League.
- Bristol City are having a strong season in the Championship and currently sit just 2 points outside the automatic promotion places despite losing their last 2 matches.
- Manchester City are the top scorers in the Premier League, bagging 64 goals in 22 games.
Even though Bristol City overcame Manchester United in the last round, I can’t see them getting anything out of this game. Manchester City are arguably the best team in Europe right now and Pep Guardiola has taken all of the cup competitions very seriously with his team selection this season, so I think he’ll name another strong line up for this game. I’m expecting Manchester City to win this game by two or three clear goals.
Betting Tips (Coral)
Manchester City start this game as huge favourites at odds of 1/8, whilst an unlikely away victory for Bristol City is priced up at 28/1, with the draw available at 8/1. Obviously there is no value on a straight up bet on Manchester City to win here, so we have to delve a little deeper to find something more appealing. I think Manchester City could win big here and so the Evens available on them to win with a -2 handicap looks like a great bet to me.
