The undoubted game of the first round so far has been Portugal’s stunning 3-3 draw with Spain in which Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick. It was a game which will live long in the memory and Portugal will now be looking to pick up their first victory against the bottom side in Group B, Morocco, on Wednesday afternoon. This is a must win game for Morocco after their surprising loss to Iran on match day one, and if the North African side lose in Moscow, their World Cup hopes are probably over.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a fantastic last minute free kick to steal a 3-3 draw against Spain in Portugal’s first match and the Real Madrid forward will have his sights set on the Golden Boot award now. Portugal looked excellent going forward in that match and they will be hoping to sweep Morocco aside on Wednesday and edge closer to qualification for the last 16. Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored 84 goals for Portugal and averages a goal every 142 minutes for the national team; a quite staggering record.
Morocco fans and players were left stunned by their 1-0 defeat to Iran in game one as Aziz Bouhaddouz scored a 95th minute own goal. Morocco were expected to win the game comfortably, but they seemed to run out of ideas after not scoring early on. That defeat was their first loss in 18 matches and if this Morocco side are to have any chance of progressing to the next round, they must get something out of Wednesday’s match against Portugal. Nordin Amrabat is expected to miss the clash after picking up a head injury against Iran and he will be a big loss to this Morocco side.
Portugal vs Morocco Prediction
On paper you’d expect Portugal to win this game comfortably, but you also would have expected Morocco to beat Iran on match day one. Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to improve his goal tally in this one and even though Morocco have a solid backline, I wouldn’t bet against him scoring again on Wednesday. Overall, I think Portugal will have too much quality in attacking areas in this one and I’m backing them to win the game.
Portugal vs Morocco Betting Tips (Coral)
Portugal start this game as favourites at odds of 8/13, whilst a much needed victory for Morocco is priced up at 5/1, with the draw available at 13/5. Despite Morocco playing some decent stuff against Iran in the first game, they still lost the game and I’m expecting them to lose again on Wednesday. I don’t think Morocco have enough quality in attack and so the 11/8 available on Portugal to win to nil looks like a good bet to me. Cristiano Ronaldo will be hoping to add to his goal tally on Wednesday and the Real Madrid forward is priced up at 11/5 to open the scoring or 3/4 to score at anytime. Either of those look like solid bets to me as I think he’ll score in the game.
