The Champions League continues on Tuesday night as Chelsea host Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in a mouth watering knockout round tie. These two sides have been involved in some epic games against each other in recent years with Chelsea having eliminated Barcelona three times in recent seasons, whilst Barcelona have inflicted the same fate upon their opponents twice. These two were involved in a highly controversial game at Stamford Bridge in 2009 when Andres Iniesta scored a last minute goal to eliminate Chelsea which sparked a furious row between Chelsea players and the referee at the final whistle.
Barcelona are enjoying an excellent season and currently sit ten points clear at the top of La Liga. They recovered from back to back draws with a 2-0 victory over Eibar on Saturday as Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba got themselves on the score sheet. New signing Philipe Coutinho is cup tied and unavailable for Champions League games, but French winger Ousamane Dembele is fit again after missing most of the season through injury.
Chelsea are finding things much tougher this season after winning the Premier League last time out. Antonio Conte’s side are currently fourth in the table, but have won just two of their last five matches in the Premier League. Chelsea did overcome Hull City 4-0 in the FA Cup on Friday night, but like Barcelona, they will be without their big January signing as Olivier Giroud is also cup tied for this competition.
- Chelsea are slightly ahead in terms of the head to head record with 4 wins, 5 draws and 3 losses in the Champions League.
- Both sides big January signings are unavailable for the game with Olivier Giroud and Philipe Coutinho cup tied.
- Lionel Messi has scored 27 times this season, the most of anyone in La Liga.
Chelsea vs Barcelona Prediction
These two sides have played out some classic Champions League matches over the past two decades and I think we could be in for another one this time around. Barcelona have been in superb form in La Liga this season and they will fancy their chances of overcoming a struggling Chelsea side here. I think the draw could be the most likely result on Tuesday, and whatever happens, I think it’ll be a tight contest.
Chelsea vs Barcelona Betting Tip
Barcelona start this game as 11/10 favourites, whilst a home win for Chelsea is priced up at 12/5, with the draw available at 12/5 as well. I think this is a really tough one to call and if I had to back a result I’d be going for the draw. I can’t see there being too many goals in the game, so Under 2.5 Goals at 19/20 also looks like a good bet to me.
