The Championship: Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday

Friday night throws up this good-looking Sheffield derby in the Championship and both really could use the boost of the three points as well from it. After their promotion challenge last season, Wednesday just haven’t gotten going this season and are well out of form, but this season’s promotion challenge of Sheffield United is in danger of slipping away as they are struggling for wins. Sheffield United are 17/20 odds on for the win with Wednesday out at 7/2.

Sheffield United Form

The Blades were firing along and really looking as if they could battle it out for an automatic promotion place up to the Premier League. At the moment, well not so much. Since taking a good 3-1 away win at Burton on November 17th, the Blades have won just one of their following nine league games (D3 L5). So they are tanking a little bit and haven’t been reliable on home soil either. They have posted a W1 D1 L3 record in their last five at Bramall Lane and their scoring power has just started to desert them a little bit as the grind has set in. Still, the Blades are W8 D1 L4 this season at home in the Championship and they are looking to complete the double over their arch-rivals this season. They have averaged 1.8 goals per game at home just about and that may be enough to see off the Owls again. They do have only one clean sheet in their last seven home games though.

Sheffield Wednesday Form

From play-off contenders last season to a side struggling to get out of the bottom half of the table. This wasn’t supposed to happen to the Owls this season but they in poor form right now with a W1 L5 record in their last six. That win, which was against Nottingham Forest over Christmas is their only victory in their last ten league outings. They have failed to score in their last two games as well and on New Year’s Day were hammered at home 3-0 by Burton, who are in the relegation zone and they were held by League Two’s Carlisle in the FA Cup. Away from home in the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday are W3 D4 L6 and have one win in their last five road games. They have conceded at least two goals in five of their last seven games. They are there for the taking it would appear.

Head to Head News

Sheffield United have lost just one of their last four at home against their rivals, but each of those last four derbies at Bramall Lane have seen at least four goals in each of them. The Blades took a 4-2 win out at Hillsborough earlier in the season in what was their ninth Championship clash. From that sequence of games, Sheffield United are W4 D3 D4 against Sheffield Wednesday.

Top Betting Tips

The Blades look as if they can respond to their recent woes by getting a home win in this one. The Owls are pretty much all over the place at the moment and roared on by the Bramall Lane faithful, the Blades can complete the double over their city rivals this season.
